The Bon Tradition & Tibetan Shamanic Lineage

Divine Feminine Wisdom, the Five Elements & the Path of Inner Transformation

An ancient lineage of shamanic, elemental, and energetic practices rooted in direct experience of the natural and spiritual worlds.

An Ancient Lineage Rooted in Direct Experience

Long before Buddhism spread throughout Tibet, there existed an ancient and deeply mystical spiritual tradition known as Bon.

The Bon tradition is one of the oldest living spiritual lineages, preserving teachings that work not only with the mind, but with the energetic body, consciousness, and the deeper layers of human awareness. Rather than asking for belief, Bon invites direct relationship — with energy, with the elements, with spirit, and with the true nature of self.

The Divine Feminine in the Bon Tradition

At the heart of the Bon tradition is a profound honoring of the Divine Feminine.

Many of the guiding forces within this lineage are female deities, representing:

  • compassion
  • intuitive wisdom
  • fierce protection
  • and transformational power

The feminine in this tradition is not passive — it is alive, intelligent, and deeply present, guiding practitioners into receptivity, inner awareness, and connection with the heart. This presence is often experienced as both nurturing and powerful, supporting healing through softening, awareness, and returning to balance, rather than force.

Deities, Compassion & the Path of Awakening

Within the Bon and Tibetan traditions, practitioners work with enlightened beings and deities not as external figures to worship, but as living expressions of consciousness and energetic qualities that can be cultivated within.

Among the most recognized are:

  • Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) — the embodiment of infinite compassion, associated with the sacred mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, which is used to awaken love, presence, and compassion within the heart.
  • Tapihritsa — a central figure in the Bon tradition, representing the realization of the Rainbow Body and the true nature of mind as luminous, spacious awareness.
  • Sipé Gyalmo — a powerful female protector deity, embodying fierce compassion, protection, and the clearing of obstacles along the spiritual path.

These deities are not separate from us — they reflect aspects of our own awakened nature, accessed through practice and awareness.

Mantra, Meditation & the Living Field of Energy

In the Bon tradition, the path is experiential, not conceptual.

Through mantra, meditation, and intentional awareness, practitioners learn to:

  • calm and focus the mind
  • regulate the nervous system
  • align with qualities such as compassion, clarity, and inner stability

Mantras are understood as vibrational frequencies, not just words. When practiced consistently, they help to shift consciousness, open the heart, and create a deeper sense of connection to self and life.

The Five Elements

A Map of the Inner World

  • Earth — stability and grounding
  • Water — flow and emotional balance
  • Fire — transformation and vitality
  • Air (Wind) — movement and thought
  • Space (Ether) — awareness and openness

These elements exist not only in nature, but within the body, mind, and energetic system.

When they are in balance, there is a natural sense of:

  • clarity
  • vitality
  • emotional ease
  • and connection

When they are out of balance, individuals may experience:

  • anxiety or overwhelm
  • fatigue or depletion
  • emotional instability
  • or a sense of disconnection

The work of the Bon tradition is to restore harmony within these elements, allowing the individual to return to their natural state.

The Rainbow Body

The Highest Realization

One of the most profound teachings within the Bon tradition is the concept of the Rainbow Body. This teaching describes a state of realization in which the practitioner has refined their awareness and energy to such a degree that the physical and energetic bodies integrate into pure light and consciousness.

At the highest levels, it is said that:

  • the body dissolves into light
  • awareness expands beyond form
  • and the individual returns to their true luminous nature

On a deeper level, this teaching is not about achieving something — it is about remembering what you already are beneath layers of conditioning and identity. It points to the understanding that your true nature is already whole, already luminous, already connected.

A Practice Rooted in Nature & Shamanic Awareness

Much like the shamans of Peru, the Bon tradition is deeply connected to the understanding that the world is a living field of energy and consciousness.

Practitioners work in relationship with:

  • the elements
  • the natural world
  • unseen forces and spiritual presence
  • and the energetic body

Rather than separating spirituality from life, this path recognizes that everything is alive, everything is interconnected, everything is in relationship.

Chongtul Rinpoche & the Tsi Dup Yang Bod Teachings

Chongtul Rinpoche carries forward the teachings of the Bon tradition, including the Tsi Dup Yang Bod practices, which focus on energetic balance, elemental harmony, and direct awareness.

These teachings guide practitioners to:

  • understand their own energy
  • restore balance within the elements
  • and access deeper levels of awareness

They are not theoretical — they are practices that are lived and experienced over time.

How This Lives Within Shamanic Trekker

At Shamanic Trekker, this lineage is honored alongside the Andean Q'ero tradition, creating a bridge between Tibetan and Peruvian shamanic wisdom.

Kristen White has been trained and initiated within the Bon tradition in 2008, including the Tsi Dup Yang Bod practices under Chongtul Rinpoche, bringing a deep understanding of:

  • elemental balance
  • intuitive awareness
  • compassion-based practice
  • and energetic alignment

This integration creates a more complete and grounded approach to working with energy, consciousness, and personal transformation.

A Return to Your True Nature

At its core, the Bon tradition reminds us that we are not separate from nature, from energy, or from the deeper intelligence of life.

Through awareness, compassion, and balance, we begin to soften, reconnect, and return — not to something new, but to what has always been there.
